THE PORT OF AUCKLAND

Sir, —An item in Monday's Herald appears to be of particular interest. In recording the departures of a large number of oversea vessels during the weekend, the Herald mentions two motor ships which were despatched to Wellington for the sole purpose of bunkering fuel oil before proceeding overseas. We have been told a great deal about the up-to-date port that Auckland possesses, but it .seems strange that oversea vessels have to be sent to other ports in New Zealand to obtain fuel oil. It would be interesting to know when this port will lie brought in line with the other up-to-date ports of the world in this matter. Aucklander.
