CRUSHED AGAINST WHARF.
FERRY PASSENGER'S FATE.
RESULT OF TAKING A RISK.

A verdict of accidental death was returned to-day at the inquest touching the death of Mr.-Ebenezer Thomas Stoddart Lambert, who died last Tuesday from severe .injuries received by being crushed between . the ferry steamer Duchess and the Bona Bay wharf. Edward William Eeynolds, a passenger on the Duchess at the time of the accident, said he was standing with deceased •on the lower deck.. As the vessel reached the^ Bona Bay wharf witness prepared to climb on to. the wharf but thought it was too risky and jumped back again. He saw Lambert standing on the rail with his hands on the wharf above. Then the ship swung in on a heavy swell and deceased was crushed against the wharf [ Witness caught nim when the ship back. The - gangway was fastened on the •upper deck at the time and the s.teamor was properly mo6red. Alexander T. B. Duncan, traffic inspector of the Eastbourne Borough Council ferry service, said warning notices were posted on each vessel and on all wharves. Thousands of times I have warned people against the practice of climbing off the steamers," said witness. In returning a verdict of accidental death the coroner, Mr. W. G. Biddell, S.M., commented on the danger that existed in Reaving or boarding moving .vehicles ; such' as motor-cars, trains or shipi ' ' ' ■
