ROADS OF CONCRETE.

PROPOSAL F,pR NORTHCOTE. IMPROVING MAIN ROUTES. SPECIAL REPORT AUTHORISED. The question of constructing the main roads of Northcote' in concrete was before the Northcote Borough Council lust evening, and it was decided to obtain a report from Mr. A. Greville Walter on the matter. Tho scheme includes the main road, starting from the wharf and traversing Queen Street and Lake Road to the northern boundary at Takapuna, and the western route along Onewa Road from the War Memorial to the Junior High School. Tho matter was introduced by the following notice of motion by tho Mayor, Mr. C. A. Deu.xberry: "That an engineer's report be obtained on the question of the main roads in Northcote." He stated that the completion of the main road would come before the council when framing the estimates for the ensuing year. As it was going to. be an expensive work, it would be more satisfactory to obtain a report from an engineer. The cost would bo 50 to 60 guineas, and the report would be available in about three weeks. Mr. A. W. Smith seconded. Mr. J. B. Tonar said concrete was the only material that should be considered in the construction of the Northcote main roads, and the engineer should be instructed to report on this understanding. The Mayor agreed to incorporate in his motion a stipulation for concrete, and in this forin the motion was carried unanimously. Mr. Jackson suggested that the council should ear-mark the heavy traffic fees for the payment of interest, instead of increasing the rate by collecting a loan interest rate. It was decided to approach the Takapuna Borough Council and the Waitemata County Council with a view tc securing their co-operation in pressing for subsidies for these main roads. The engineer was instructed to report on Belle Vue Avenue.
