FAREWELL TO MR W. H. HALES EFFICIENT RAILWAY OFFICER. Representatives of all branches of the Railway Department in Auckland gathered together at headquarters yesterday afternoon to make a presentation and bid farewell to Mr. W. H. Hales, North Island divisional superintendent, who is leaving the department and intends, with Mrs. Hales, to visit England and the Continent. Mr. J. F. Mackly, chief locomotive engineer for the North Island, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr. Hales with a handsome suitcase and a gold-mounted fountain pen suitably inscribed. Tilr. Mackly referred' to the long and efficient service of Mr. Hales and to his many fine qualities, both as a railway official and as a man. Mr. Hales, he said, was an officer who had a wide railway experience in New Zealand, and had previously toured America, England, and the Continent in search of information. Mr. Hales was also asked to accept a travelling bag on behalf of Mrs. Hales. Eulogistic references to Mr. Hales wcro made by Mr. J. Rickerby, district traffic manager, and other speakers, Mr. Hales made a suitable reply. The gathering came to a close with the singing of " For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."
