OBITUARY.

MR. EDWIN THOMAS HART, V ' ' The death occurred at TakapunaV.yesterday of Mr. Edwin Thomas Hart, who was headmaster of Beresford Street School from 1892 to 1915. A native of Birmingham, where he was born in 1850, Mr. Hart started in life, in his teens,-.'as a pupil teacher in one of the national schools of that , city. Afterwards Securing a national scholarship, ho deceived two years' training in the. Winchester training school, and at the age of 22; was appointed by tho Birmingham Education Board as headmaster of the first 'new board school opened in England,'; Mr. Chamberlain being chairman of the board that made tho selection. 111-health caused Mr. Eart to relinquish the appointment in 1879, and, coming to 'New Zealand, he engaged in farm life in the Kaipara district for two years. Restored to health., he was, in 1881, appointed firstassistant teacher at Beresford -Street School. In 1884 he became headmaster of Nelson Street School, and in 1888 headmaster at Napier Street, a school that had been built upon a Birmingham model suggested by--.Mr. Hart to the architect. It was from there that he was transferred to Beresford Street, tho scene of his labours for. tho remainder of his professional life. o.Mr. Hart is survived by hi? wife and two sons, Mr. Bryce Hart and Mr. Lindsay Bart, of Auckland. The death occurred to-day of Mrs. Burd, wife of Mr. Thomas Burd, who was for many years district roads' engineer a,t Te Kuiti, and afterwards' at Tauranga, retiring a few years ago. ' The late Mrs. Burd was born in »New Plymouth 6i3 years ago, being a daughter of the late Judge Halse, wall-known in the Taranaki district in the very early days. Mrs. Burd is survived by her husband, one son, Mr. John Marsh Burd, farmer, of Oropi, and two daughters, Mrs. Fabling, of Hamilton, and Mrs. G. Pott, of Tauranga.
