GISBORNE HARBOUR.
A TEMPORARY BREAKWATER. STEAMER MONOWAI OFFERED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] GISBOENE, Sunday. The acquisition of the Union Steam Ship Company's old steamer Monowai for sinking at Whareongaonga, for the purpose of a breakwater and- jetty, is to be considered, at a special meeting of the Gisborne Harbour Board next week. If the purchase - is decided upon this method of constructing a cheap but efficient mole will result in a considerable saving in time and expense to the board, while Ike structure formed, although more or less temporary, is expected to outlast the requirements of the construction work. The proposal is not a new one, but has 'been under .consideration for some time, the difficulty being to secure a hull suitable for the purpose. A few months ago the board considered that the hull of the Talune was offered to them, but before a decision was reached.. it .was learned that the vessel had been acquired by the Government for similar use at Waikokopu. The'procedure at Wharcongonga would be very similar to that at Waikokopu, and it is understood that comparatively little preliminary work would be necessary.
