Y.W.C.A. ACTIVITIES.

BUSY CHRISTMAS SEASON. PLANNING TREATS FOR OTHERS. Christmas with the Young Women's Christian Association is a busy time. First of all there is the thrift or savings bank system. Most of the 1000 depositors find it necessary to draw out the whole or part of their savings at Christmas and within the last week or so nearly £I4OO has been withdrawn Most of this has to be paid out in small sums and necessarily a lot of detail work is involved. Then there are the breaking-up parties. Twenty-five or 30 different clubs and groups set out to have some k;ind of windup function' before the summer recess. There is quito a scramble for social, rooms, and as many as three or four tunctions have been known to fail, on one night. A notable event was the clubs* " break-up and stunt" night, when 12 different groups, totalling some 200 girls, each put oh a different " stunt " or performance. These varied from modern., plays demanding quite a high order of "talent and preparation to an amusing but original representation of " Early Doors at the Theatre." All showed originality and resource, and the judges awarded the banner to the hostel girls for their original sketch depicting very realistically " Scenes of Hostel Life." True to their purpose of doing something for others, all clubs are planning some Christmas treat for children. On Saturday the Campers' Club will entertain 70 children from the City Mission to tea and a Christmas Tree, while the Esprit de Corps are taking a big box to the Manurewa orphanage, and the Hamodavas, Comrades' and Kctiro Koa Clubs combine on a treat for the children of the Onehunga Boys' Home. The Hoa Club have chosen to adopt a needy family and to provide some food and clothing. Christmas Sunday, December 20. will be celebrated by a combined service of Y.M.C.A. and Y.W.C.A. members at the Y.W.C.A. hall. There will be special carol singing and the Rev. Jasper Calder will bp the speaker. Miss Margaret Stoddart will play. Last but not least is the Christmas dinner for girls away from home which is held on Christoas Day at 6 p.m. and is followed by a Christmas party. Last year over 80 attended the dinner and this year preparations are being made for even larger numbers. The Christmas Camp at Blockhouse Bay opens on December 24 and bookings are now being made.
