THE VICTORIA LEAGUE.

REMITS FOR CONFERENCE. GIFT TO MISS FERGUSSON. The council of the Victoria League met yesterday, the president, Mr. W. ,J. Napier, presiding. It was decided to invest £SOO of the league's funds in the new Government loan. A sum of £lO was voted to the Education Committee for presents for poor children at Christmas. A special vote of thanks was passed to Miss Mowbray for her services for many years past, and especially during the visit of the American Fleet. The executive was directed to obtain' a suitable souvenir for presentation to Miss Mowbray at the next social reunion. It was reported that largo numbers of magazines had been distributed to country districts during the past quarter. Contributions made bv the league during the quarter were:—Four free kindergartens, £lO each-"Young Citizens' League, girls' branch, £2O; Boy Scouts' Association, £2O: and Plunket Society, £2O. It was decided to present a beautiful clock of New Zealand manufacture, and emblematic of tho Dominion, to Miss Fergusson, daughter of the Governor-General, on the occasion of her marriage. The following remits to the conference of Victoria Leagues to be held in Dunedin on November 28, were passed:— (1) (a) That the license of speech in the streets permitted to communists, anarchists and others be curtailed, and that open-air addresses be organised to counteract their influence; (b) that additional and adequate powers be granted the Government to preserve the safety of the State when it is imperilled. (2) That the postage on British magazines and books coming to the Dominion be reduced, and that books distributed among back-block settlers be carried at newspaper rates. (3) That the league cordially support tho proposal for an Empire shopping w.eek. Misses Mowbray and Hadfield and Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Napier were appointed delegates to the, conference.
