THERMAL ACTIVITY.
Sir, —Tn votir issue of the Bth Inst, you had a short article, from your Rotorua correspondent, about a new geyser that had broken out in Ohinemutu. In the interest of Botorua it is only fair that, the public should know the full facts of the case. On July 14, 1923, Messrs. Simpson, "S&jmson (water diviners) and others started boring and digging for hot water on Mr. Simpson's section. Previously there was no indication of a hot spring on the site oi the present outbreak. On July 16, after soaping it, a young native named Munna Thomas got badly scalded. They continued digging, at intervals, tnl September 17 when an outbreak like the present occurred. They were then ordered by the Tourist Department to fill it up. It has remained quiescent until a few days ago when they again started tampering with it, hence the present display. Two springs in the neighbourhood nave gone dry in consequence. I understand the Tourist Department is taking action in the matter, as it is illegal to »or& for hot springs in the thermal district. Kotorua. F. A. Whitakeb.
