OBITUARY.

MIL JOHN BLACK, The death occurred recently m Lawrence. Otago, of Mr. John Black, who was well known in Auckland wad Thames 50 years ago. Born at Carluke, Scotland, he arrived with his parents at Dunedin in the ship Alpine in 1859. He followed goldmining with ardour in the rashes of the "sixties," seeking his fortune at Gabriel's Golly, on the Thames field, and hater at the Waitahuna Gully. There he finally took up a farm on which he remained until his death. He leaved a widow, a daughter and two sons, on® of whom is Mr. Robert Black, of Devonport. MR. EDWARD BUNKJSR. The death has occurred at Paeroa oI Mr. Edward Bunker, a very old resident of the Auckland Province. Mr. Bunker, who was 94 years of age, arrived in Auckland by the ship Oxford 51 years ago and saw the city grow from a comparatively small settlement. Among his reminiscences he often spoke of the un developed nature of the town when he first saw it and remembered that there was a flourishing nursery at the foot of Victoria Street where the City Chambers now stand. Hi§ wife died about 23 years ago and he is survived by two sons, Messrs. W. A. and H. R Bunker, and oua daughter, Mrs. Does, besides nine g/andchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. MR. JAMES SOUTHCOMBE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN COBBESPONUKNT. ] WANGANUI, Tuesday. There has just passed away one of the oldest settlers of the Wanganui district) Mr. Jara«s Southcombe, aged 89 years. Hs was a Maori War veteran, who later on conducted a hotel nnd general store business at Haleoiabe and Waitotara. He was well known all along the coast, and was held in the highest esteem. He married Miss Eliza Russell, daughter of the late Mr. William Spiers Russell, of Aramoho. A grown-up family of five sons and three daughters are left.
