TRAM ELECTRIFICATION

THE TAKAPUNA SYSTEM. AGREEMENT COMPLETED. SERVICE NEXT SEPTEMBER, Takapnna is assured of electric traction on its tramway system from September of next; year, provided the Public Works Department is able to comply strictly with its undertaking to deliver electric current from Arapnni to the Waitemata Eleutric Power Board in that month. The agreement between the Takapuna Tramways mid Ferry Company and the Power Boa cd, under which the board undertakes to supply and the company %rees to lake the power required for traction purposes, has been duly signed and sealed, and the company is proceeding with its electrification scheme. Tenders have already been invited for the electrification of ths tramline, and are to close on December 31. Particulars of the requirements in the matter were sent abroad by the last English mail, to enable . English and American construction companies to Compete for the contract.. Other improvements in the tramwav scheme provide that as soon as the roadwidening works now being earned out by the Takapuna Borough Council on the Bays water slope are completed, the company will duplicate its line from the wharf to the Auckland Gas Company's pressure-regulating shed near the cemetery, as a means of expediting the working of the electric service. The four buses which are being built in Auckland for the company are to be delivered by the contractors early in December. When these are ready to be commissioned, it is intended, in the hours of slack traffic each day, to run bases from Bayswater Wharf to Takapuna on alternate* trips with the tramcars. The advent of the buses will also be signalised by the running of more frequent trips by the company's steamers, with each of which there will be either bus or tramcar connection. >
