WHITE ISLAND COMPANY
COMFORT OF THE tyOBKEfiS. OFFICIAL INSPECTION MADE. LARGE ORDER FOR SULPHUR. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OPOTHH. Wednesday. A party consisting of Major Mercer, director of the White Island Agricultural and Chemical Company, Mr. Paul, metal mines inspector, North Island, and Captain Berridge, O.V. Coronation, left Opotiki at 5 ajn. on Tuesday by launch on a visit of inspection to White Island. The trip was arranged for the purpose of enabling Mr. Paul to inspect the accommodation for the men and ako to seS what the working conditions are like. His report on the visit will be forwarded to Wellington. Captain Berridge made the trip to take soundings and note the best anchorages for the shipping of the sulphur, chemical fertiliser and guano. The inspection showed that every possible care had been taken to house the workmen under the best conditions as to locality and comfort in buildings. The kitchen is a fine room set round with cup-, boards, enabling the chef to work with the greatest convenience. A large storeroom was found filled with all kinds of provisions. The dining room is 24ft. by 24ft., giving ample room for the men, a largo_ fireplace adding comfort. The men working on the island expressed themselves thoroughly satisfied with the conditions.
A plentiful supply of literature has been provided; also a gramophone. Wireless is to be installed and a transmission license has been granted by the Government. This will be of great value in case of possible accident or sickness. The chef is a man with seven years' ambulance experience and an up-to-date medicine chest is available. •
It is the intention of the management to get out a large, quantity of sulphur first, an order for 7000 tons to a New Zealand firm having been placed. The guano, which shows in big faces, will then be worked. The natural chemical fertiliser from the crater bed found a ready market in 1913. It contains a high percentage of free sulphur and soluble salts and will shortly again be on the market.
