THE NEW DIOCESE.

SELECTION OF A BISHOP. ARCHDEACONRIES COMMITTEE. THE FINANCIAL OUTLOOK. [BY TEMGKAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] HAMILTON. Wednesday. • The election of the Waikato Archdeaconry's qnota of the joint committee of the Waikato and Taranaki Archdeaconries, of ten members, five clergy and five laity, to receive nominations for a bishop of the new Waikato diocese, to be formed on April 1, was held to-day. Over 40 members attended the meeting, which- represented the Waikato Archdeaconry Board. Archdeacon E. M. Cowio presided. Two clerical members, the Revs. F. G, Harvie and E. H. Strong, and two lay members, Messrs. Rutherford and Lysona, were elected by the Taranaki Archdeaconry Board a fortnight ago. Those elected by the Waikato board to-day were the Revs. C. Mortimer Jones, Vicar of Cambridge, and J. A. Kempthorne, Vicar of Morrinsville, and Messrs. 0. R. Farrer, of Hamilton; H. G. Oorbett, of Ofcorohanga, and F. Harris, of Hunfcly. Archdeacon Cowie will be chairman ex officio. It will be the duty of this committee to receive - names of clergy who are deemed fit to become bishop of the new diocese, and, to make inquiries concerning these whose fumes are submitted. The committee will submit such names, and all information obtained oy ifr, to the convention called on the constitution of the new diocese to elect a bishop. The committee ■will also decide what funds it is necessary to raise in the new diocese in order to place the, diocese on a satisfactory financial footing, and will decide when an appeal is to be made for such funds.- With regard to the finances of the new diocese it was stated that the income from the endowments which will be available is not nearly sufficient for the efficient working of the diocese, and that an appeal for funds throughout the diocese will be necessary. While the stipend of the bishop is assured the amount which will be available from endowments to meet general expenses and grants is far below what is required.
