PRICE OF FOWL WHEAT.

POULTRY FARMERS' BURDEN. REQUEST MADE FOR RELIEF. REMOVAL OF IMPORT DUTY. The high cost of fowl wheat and other grain suitable for fowl feed is causing concern to tho poultry farmers and many aro finding it difficult to carry on their business. Those engaged in tho industry state that eggs cannot, be produced at a profit with feed at present prices. Last season a similar position aroso and the Government relieved matters considerably by importing wheat from Australia and having it distributed through tho usual commercial channels. This enabled poultry farmers to obtain tho best quality of wheat at 6s 6d to 6s iid per bushel. The price of fowl wheat to-day is 9s 6d to 9s 9d per bushel, exactly 50 per cent, greater than last season. Tho Government is now being requested to remove tho duty of 2s per cental on Australian wheat or to import and distribute wheat from tho Commonwealth on a basis similar to that adopted last year. It is contended that the duty is unnecessary as tho South Island growers have already disposed of their stocks and the millers are importing from Australia. The removal of the duty, it is urged, will be of great assistance to egg producers and will not prejudice the interests of any other branch of farming. |
