PAVING ON WHARVES.

SURFACES TO BE RENEWED. PRINCE'S WHARF ASPHALT. Tho uneven and worn pavements .on the wharves and the floors of the Harbour Board sheds aro to be surfaced with a bituminous mixture. Reporting to tho board yesterday, the engineer, Mr. D. Holderness, said the special plant for carrying out bituminous paving on tho wharves was being erected. He recommended that authority bo given to pave tho concrete floors in the sheds sheds 17 and 18 on Queen's Wharf, on Prince's and Central Wharves and in Reference was made to tho unsatisfactory condition of the tarred surface put down on some of the wharves ten years ago, Mr. Carr characterising it as " a waste of money." Tho engineer said it had beeen found necessary to take up the tarred pavement on Prince's Wharf and a bituminous mixture would bo laid down 2in. thick. A surface paving was necessary over the concrete, ho said, as otherwise the concrete would be worn down to an undesirable depth. Authority was given to spend £7OOO on the work suggested by the engineer. The balance of £IO,OOO, necessary to complete the bituminous paving of the wharves, will bo provided for on next year's estimates.
