COMMERCIAL FORESTRY.
THE , PUTARURU DISTRICT. LARGE - SCALE OPERATIONS. , [BIT TELKGEAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] PUTARURU. Friday. Tho manager of a group of tree-planting companies operating in the Putaruru district gave some astonishing figures relative to tree-planting. Despite tho stormy weather of the past few days no less than 120 men aro employed. A total of 4500 acres has already been planted. Two hundred thousand trees are heeled in on the block for tho daily requirements, and a further five to six million trees are ready for transplanting from the nurseries.
The number of trees planted averages 160,000 a day, representing 1600 trees for each man engaged in the actual planting operations. It is expected that 16,000 acres will be planted before the season ends in September or October.
Great as these figures aro they would have been largely exceeded but for the inclement weather of the past few weeks. Tho impassable state of the roads has delayed operations put in hand for tho construction'of new camps.
