NEW IMMIGRATION LAW. OPERATION IN AMERICA. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 1.5 a.m.) WASHINGTON. Feb. 18. The new immigration restriction law has definitely settled America's immigration problem according to a statement made in the Senate by Mr. I). A. Reed, of Pittsburg!), in reviewing the operation of Ihe law. He objected to suggestions for a modification of the Act, saying that it bad accomplished the three purposes intended. It had brought about a more uniform distribution of immigration throughout the year; an apportionment of quotas more in accordance, with the "make-up of the nation; and a drastic reduction in the number of arrivals. The threatened inhux of 1.000,000 Europeans every year into toe country had dwindled to a problem of about 20,000 Mexicans entering.
