THE JUBILEE INSTITUTE.

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES.

VERY SUCCESSFUL CONCERT.

The breaking-up concert of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind was held last evening, Mr. H. E. Vaile, chairman of thft board of trustees, presiding over a large attendance. Before presenting the prizes, Mr. Vaile congratulated the pupils on the results obtained by some of their number in outside examinations. He mentioned that over 3000 people attended the fair held on November 7 and 8, which yielded £234. Articles made by the pupils to tiie value of £143 were sold. Thanks were expressed for the gift of £193 by the school children of New Zealand, in response to an appeal by Mr. Frank Norris, of Masterton. All seven pupils of the class equivalent to standard VI. of the primary schools gained proficiency certificates with ease this year, and a eulogistic report from the inspector of schools was read. The certificates were then presented. Three prizes awarded by the board of trustees for perseverance, and character both in and out of school, were won by Frank Caple, head of the whole school, George Harvey, in the middle division, and Lawrence Hunt, in the lower division. Two prizes offered by Messrs. Wilson and Horton for the best essay on "The Conquest of Blindness," were also presented. The first prize was won by Robert Martin, and tlio second by Rose Fletcher. Miss Elsie Morton, who judged the essays, was so pleased with them that she decided to offer a third prize, which was.won by Cyril White. Mr. Vailo extended the thanks of the trustees to all those who had helped the institute during the year. A long and varied programme of musical and elocutionary items was presented, and was enthusiastically received. A recitation, "What Became of Them ?" by a tiny tot named Rena Bedogni, literally brought down the houso. The children radiated an atmosphere of cheerfulness throughout, and the concert could scarcely have been a greater success. At the end of the programme a presentation was made on behalf of the trustees and staff by the director, Mr. Clutha Mackenzie, to Mr. Doric Algie, M.A., who is about to be married. A present, on behalf of the present and past students, was also given to Mr. Algie by Master Cyril White
