SERIOUS ASSAULT CASE.
MAN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL,.
MENTALLY DEFECTIVE WOMAN.
Charges of rape and attempted unlawful carnal knowledge of a mentally defective young woman were preferred against Ernest Arnold Curtis, aged 32 (Mr. Clark), in the Polico Court, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., yesterday.
The girl,, although 25 years of age, was not considered a competent witness and was not called.
Her mother stated that accused, who was accustomed to visit the house, had apparently persuaded the girl to leave the premises and go into an adjoining reserve. Witness summoned a constable and when the girl returned she said she had been with accused.
Detective O'Brien, Acting Detective White and Constable Anniss stated that accused had admitted having committed an offence while under the influence of liquor, but asserted that the young woman had consented. He stated he had consumed four bottles of ir ethylated spirits. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supremo Court for trial. Bail was fixed at £200.
