_ Descending from the main' deck of the Hood to the boiler room is an! easy process; for those who do not ; like climbing down the , usual steel steps of a ship's engine room.; This vessel, liike a good number of other British battleships, is fitted with automatic electric lifts ' for taking down and bringing up hdr boilerroom men, and during her visit to various . Commonwealth and ' Dominion ports visitors .have been, only too pleased. to use this method of reaching not the least interesting section of the vessel. When the Hood was in .Melbourne 36,000 people visited her, of whom -no - Small proportion descended : into the vessel's'depths by way ol the passenger - lifts. Electric • lifts for -shipboard use are now quite a common. feature, both in naval and mercantile vessels, .and the firm of Smith, - Major aud Stevens, lift encinoi Northampton and London, nave fitted such up-to-date appliances iot only in the Hood, but also in the Repaise . and : a , number of other British battleships. .' Notable among these are the ;;super Dreadnoughts Neptune, ; Orion,Monarch, y Iron ' Duke, Thunderer, Conqueror, Ajax, Benbow, and Marlborough, .in ally well over ; 50 passenger lifts have been installed in these mighty, fighting units, i and if account were taken of ih<- i mail and passenger liners similarly equipped, that total would be consider- ! ably increased. That famous Cunard liner, the Aquitania, ; for example,' has: 10 lifts, and others are fitted 'in some of the - j best-known Orient liners. '' - : : .
