TRADE WITH ISLANDS.
SAFEGUARDING AUCKLAND,
ANXIETY OF. TRADERS.
SUBSIDY URGED.
Matters relating to the Auckland frnit trade with the Islands were brought under the notice of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday by a deputation from the Island Traders' Association. Mr. -J. Donald said Auckland traders were dissatisfied with the present unsatisfactory steamer services. Auckland had been the home of the Island trade since its inception, but there was a feeling that a service from Wellington to. the Islands was going to be subsidised by the Government. The Auckland traders desired the support and goodwill of the chamber in opposing that scheme. .It was thought the Government should do the right thing by the traders who had brought the trade to its present position. They asked for a subsidy to enable a good steamer to run from Auckland regularly. The matter was referred to a special committee.
