ISLAND BAY AFFAIRS. SEASIDE SUBDIVISIONS. J- . ' ~— ■■■.. > The Birkenhead Borongh Council met List evening The Mayor, Mr. E. G. Walton,- presided, and there were also present : Messrs. E. G. Skeates, C. E. Campbell, A- Hadfield, P. H. Hay ward, L. R. L.-Mailer, F. A. Gilpin, and T. Farrell. A deputation from - the Island Bay Progressive League requested improvements to Beach Road and also to the footpath. The Mayor said the footpath was on the Joan schedule, and would be asphalted for a width of three feet. It was decided to improve the surface of the road as a temporary expedient, and to supply ash to be "spread on the road. The borough solicitors intimated that Mr.. A. G. Jarrett had commenced a new action in connection with his application to the council to permit,subdivision of his property at Island Bay, Birkdale, with frontages to the sea, under Section 116 of the Public Works Act. Mr. Jarrett now claimed'that the resolution of the council of August 15 last, refusing his application, should be quashed, on the • ground that four- members then .voted who were, not resent _ when he and his solicitor were eard; in ; support of his application on August 1. ■■ ■. The analysis of water from the pumping station- for the : Lake Takapuna Board of. • Control disclosed a " satisfactory degree of purity. The, quantity of water used in Birkenhead - during - the past month was 2,489,000 gallons. .. • The_ surface-, of; Lake TakapUna {had fallen from 4ft. 3in. .'a month ago to 3ft. llin. above sea level. 1 Thirteen bnilding permits were granted. Consideration of a petition for the erec- ' ticm of public conveniences ana bathing sheds at Birkdale wharf was deferred till ■ next meeting. , > ,
