LOWER RATE FROM TO-DAY.

NEW TELEPHONE CHARGES.

Penny postage and the new telephone charges come into operation to-day. The rate on letters to an address within New Zealand, any part of the British Empire except Australia, or many foreign countries, including the United States, will be Id for the first ounce. Each additional ounce will be charged id on letters for delivery within New Zealand, and Id on letters to other countries to which the rate applies. The late fee is Id. Stamp dutv on receipts and cheques still remains at 2d. -M- : ■

• Although New Zealand is the first of the British Dominions to restore penny' postage, it is noteworthy; that the United States has already returned to the comparable rate of 2 cents.
