LOWER RATE FROM TO-DAY.
NEW TELEPHONE CHARGES.
Penny postage and the new telephone charges come into operation to-day. The rate on letters to an address within New Zealand, any part of the British Empire except Australia, or many foreign countries, including the United States, will be Id for the first ounce. Each additional ounce will be charged id on letters for delivery within New Zealand, and Id on letters to other countries to which the rate applies. The late fee is Id. Stamp dutv on receipts and cheques still remains at 2d. -M- : ■
• Although New Zealand is the first of the British Dominions to restore penny' postage, it is noteworthy; that the United States has already returned to the comparable rate of 2 cents. Canada still maintains 3 cents as the minimum. _ ; The new telephone rates, which commence to-day, are £15 per annum for business connections, and £8 10s for residential connections within an area bounded by a line from; Point Chevalier, through the Mount Albert tram terminus, beyond the Remuera tram terminus- to the Orakei ■ basin. • ' '■■■■ - ' '"'' The time of the first clearance of street letter boxes has been altered from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
