AUSTRALIAN WITH THE PARTY.

The New Zealand lady swimmers, Miss Violet Walrond, of Auckland, and Miss

Gwitha Sl:and, of Christchurch, returned to Auckland by the Manuka from Sydney yesterday, after competing in the Australian ladies' championships. They were accompanied by the manageress, Mrs. J. Miss Shand may also be a competitor. Speaking of the Australian visit, Mrs. Reid said the Now Zealand swimmers had experienced a very enjoyable time. The officials of the Ladies' Swimming Association were particularly kind, and had extended every courtesy. Miss Shand and Miss Walrond both did very well. In the 100 yds. championship, Miss Walrond swam the latter stages of the race in great style, and just managed to win by a narrow margin from Miss Shand, who was second. Miss Wylie was third. In the 220 yds. and 440 yds., Miss Shand beat Miss Walrond, who, however, was suffering from a cold at the time. Both girls were affected by the' heat, which was very I trying. A short country tour was undertaken, in which exhibitions were given. Mrs. Reid said the New Zealand swimmers had made a very favourable impression in Sydney swimming circles. Much good talent existed among Australian lady swimmers, but there appeared to be a need for more systematic coaching.
