LOAN FOR GERMANY.

AMERICAN RUMOUR.

ambassadors confer.

IMPROVEMENT OF MARK. By Telefriaph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 4.20 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON, Dec. IG. In consequence of reports that American bankers propose raising a large loan on behalf of Germany with the co-opera-tion of the United States Government some importance, is attached to the departure for Washington of Colonel G. Harvey. American Ambassador to Britain, after consultation in London with the American Ambassadors at Paris and Berlin.

The British Government is without official information regarding the American loan and the American proposal to summon an economic conference of tlvj chief countries of the world. The British official attitude is cautious and even sceptical regarding the American reports in view of the fact that a loan to Germany would be a hazardous speculation until Germany stabilises the mark. There is also the difficulty of Germany fJrTng adequate guarantees for repayment of the loan while the Allies under the VesniHes Treaty are able to seize German customs and other revenues to enforce payment of reparations. Exchange on Berlin is quoted at 29,500 marks to the pound as against 33,500 yesterday. The improvement is attributed to the report of American interest fn the restoration of the mark.

PROJECTED CONFERENCE.

AMERICAN INITIATIVE.

A. and N.Z.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 14,

It is stated that an invitation to a conference will be issued shortly by the United States to the European Powers, and possibly Japan, to consider the reparation question and the European situation generally.
