PROBLEM OF ACOUSTICS.
UNEXPLAINED SILENT ZONES.
EXPERIMENTAL EXPLOSION. A. and N.Z. AMSTERDAM. Oct. 29.
The Dutch Ministry of War, at the request of the Dutch Meteorological Institute and International Air Commission, exploded 5000 kilogrammes, over five tons, of Perchlorate of ammonium at Oldebroek in order to ascertain some of the peculiarities of the transmission of sound. It is known from war experience that there is often a zone of silence beyond the zone of audibility in the immediate neighbourhood of the explosion, and a second zona of audibility beyond the zone of silence. Observers in continental countries and England were a&ked to note the direction, duration and itensity of the sound of Oldebroek explosion.
