HOCKEY.

THE AUSTRALIAN VISIT.

PERSONNEL OF THE TEAM.

Interesting details regarding the members of the Australian hockey team to tour New Zealand are given in a letter received from the Australian Hockey Association by the New Zealand Association. The writer

sa yß iT " The itinerary seems a most complete one. comprising as it does four matches in that North Island and three in the South Island, at centres which will allow us to see a great deal of New Zealand. As far as I cau gather at present, not one member of the team has been to your shores, so naturally we want to see as much of your wonderful country as possible during our tour. Tho selection of the team is practically complete and only one vacancy has now to be filled. "The following comprise the team:— Goal, H. Flockart: backs. P. Ames, C. Harry, J. Ayling: halves, P. B. Freeman, J. M. Abel, R. May. W. W. Crellin, L. Kendall: forwards, A. Seaman, A. Craig, K. M. Hughes, C. R. Harwood. W. Roth, V. Kendall, and one to be seleoted. May, Crellin, and 1«. Kendall are Victorians, and the Test of the team are from New South Wales.

" This is a strong aide, and much more so than, was originally anticipated, but, of course, it could have been much improved if one or two others of our leading players had been able to get awey. " Flockart is a splendid goalkeeper, and has been.a State representative for many years until last year, when he wa* in England. Then his place was taken by W. Wildman, who is also trying to obtain lea\e for this trip. If he is successful in obtaining leave he will fill the vacanoy in the team. Ames is another seasoned player, who has represented New South Wales on three occasions. Harry and Ayling are two good backs who have been knocking at the door for inter-State honours for the last two seasons, and are little, if any, inferior to Ames. In the halves, H : M. Abel—who will nrobably captain the side— stands out as the best man we have ever had as centre half, and knows his game from A to Z. for he is a great player and a splendid captain. Freeman, who will play on one of the wings, is a. great grafter, solid in defence and as hard as a nail_. Ke is also a first grade oricketnr in this State. H. May is another good half. arM has twice represented Victoria against New South Wales. Crellin and Kendall are reputed to be reallv good men. well trained, and up to inter-S*ate standard. The forwards are an exceptionally fast lot. Seaman is the best centre forward in New Sou*h Wales, his stirkwrirlt rx?ing particularly fine, and as an individual player he stands alone in New S"uth Wale*, and I New Zealand will also like his play. H» is fror« Goulbum. a country centTe. ISO mil** from Sydney, but now playing for Sydney University."
