THE NAURU MANDATE.
CRITICISM OF COMMISSION. AN AUSTRALIAN REPLY. A. -nd N.Z. SYDNEY, Aug 16. The Sydney Morning Berald in a leader headed "Nauru Trusteeship" says 3** the criticisms by the Permanent Mandates Commission of the administration of the island are rather unfair and unjustifiable. After reviewing the position the article : proceeds: " The truth is,, we suspect that certain trading interests, former suppliers of the Commonwealth perhaps, or maybe competitors in other regions who would like a share in the wealth of Nauru, are trying to exert their influence upon the Mandates Commission so a 6 to create an am'tation against Australia and Australian rights. Our just and proper defence against the criticisms of the commission is that the responsible mandatory power is either the Imperia) Council of Prime Ministers, or His Majesty's Government, that our administration measures have been unimpeachable, and that any national benefit derived from control of the island is recognised as a-fair reward for our war , effort."
