CAPE PROVINCES TAXES.
MAKING UP A DEFICIT. PROPOSED LEVY ON INCOMES Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) CAPETOWN, May 1. The Administrator of Cape Provinces, Sir N. F. de Waal, announced in the Provincial Council that owing to the deficit due to the reduction of the Union Government's subsidy and other causes, he proposed to levy a provincial income tax on incomes above £120, starting at 50s. The motor-car and amusement taxes would be doubled, and license fees increased. The proceeds of the income tax ! would be appropriated for educational j purposes.
