Realising that street firebclls had outr lived their usefulness the Borough Council recently decided to instal the system which was in use in the city for some years before the installation of the duplex system. The Borough Council secured the superseded apparatus from the city and ite installation at Mount Albert is now complete and the system in working operation. A preliminary test of the alarms was undertaken on Saturday and everything was found to work very satisfactorily. Twelve call-boxes have, so far, been placed in position, and it is intended to add to these as further supplies become available. Eight have been installed on the New North Road at the following points: —Western Springs Road, Salisbury Road, Wairere Avenue, Alexandra Avenue, Gladstone Road, Commercial Road, King Street, and Morrin Street. The remaining fonrareonEdendalo Read, located as follows ;—Waltora. Road, Royal Terrace, Paice Avenue, and Balmoral Road. The Pelton wheel by which the main firebell at the Mount Albert Fire Brigade Station is rung te working satisfactorily. This bell will still be in use, as it is iscd to " call" the fire brigade men who are not resident at the station. The brigade possesses an up-to-date motor reel, and Captain Marter states that the new system of fire alarm will very much enhance the brigade's efficiency. Eight men are resident within 50 yards of the station, and the other seven within 100 yards.
