TAKAPUNA GALA.

CARNIVAL ON THE BEACH.

MANY VARIED ATTRACTIONS. A very successful aquatic gala and beach carnival, organised by the Takapuna Boating Club, was held on Saturday at Takapuna Beadi. Good weather prevailed, and large crowds thronged the beach during the afternoon and evening. Numerous attractions had been arranged, including four yacht races, three of which started at the King's Wharf, and finished at a point off tho beach. The fourth race, which was for the 12ft. 6in. class, started from the beach, and tho yachts were in full view during the course of the race. The beach presented a very animated appearance during tho afternoon, with the yachts sailing off the beach, or at anchor, and the moving crowds on tho sandy stretches.

In the morning races were held for the children, and in the afternoon varied attractions were arranged. There were dinghy races,' treasure hunts, and numerous sideshows. Aeroplano flights were niftdo during the earlier part of tho afternoon. An interesting tug-of-war between a motor-car and a launch was won easily by tho former. Selections were given by the Temperance Guards Band. The baby show resulted in an entry of about 70 babies, and Dr. E. J. Miller and Sister Potts, the judges, were very pleased with the healthy entrants. The first prize, a seagrass pram, went to Mrs. Frost's son, Lawrence James. The bcaCh was illuminated in tho evening, when a large crowd was again present. The arrangements wero in the hands of Mr, H. Bach, club commodore, Mr. J. Bodle, vice-commodore, and Mr. J. Peters, secretary, assisted by a capable committee. The following are tho dotails of the yachting and other events:— The start of the 14ft. oiie-deßign class was an excellent one, the boats crossing tho line within a few Beconds of one another, except Idler, which got the irorst of the despatch. Viper wbb'first away and then came Oia 111.. 1 Nyria, Joan, Ren, Rangi, and Idlor in that order. Viper continued her lead till off Devonport wharf, where she was passed by Nyria, and just before tho sandspit beacon was reached she also had to give place to Ola 111. and Joan. Nyria maintained her lead, crossing the line ovor a minute and a-balf before Idler. Rangi followed very closely, two seconds behind Idler, Viper was next, and then came Joan and Ola 111. The finishing times were: Nyria. 4h 37m 6s; Idler, dh 38m 455; Rangi, 4h 38m 475; Viper, 4h 39m 17s: Joan. 4h 39m 50s: Ola 111.. 4h 41m 15s. Tho result was: Jsyna, 1; Idler, 2; Rangi. 3. . , ... The competitors in class Y (square bilge boats) wero Sea Nymph, Sea Wolf, Early Dawn, Sea Bubble, and Sea More. From a good start at 245 p.m Sea Wolf was first across the line closely followed by Sea Nymph, with the rest of tho boats handy. The boats tailed out during the course of the race. Sea More was first across, but as she did not cross the top mark She waa disqualified by the judges. Sea Nymph followod, with Sea Bubble ovor four minutos behind, with Early Dawn and Soa Wolf at intervals The finish waa timed as follows;— Sea Nymph (4m), 4h 3m 15s; Sea Bubble (Bcr) 4h 7m 30s; Early Dawn (11m). 4h 10m 525; Sea Wolf (7m), 4h 14m 295. The result was: Sea Nymph, 1; Early Dawn, 2; Sea Wolf, 3. The 14ft. handicap class brought out 11 starters, which wero led over the line by Cynio, with Rover, Valet, Rosina, and Silver Link all handy, the others being tailed put astern. A good race resulted in Valet being first home, closely followed by Cynio, Whizs Bang was third. The finishing times were: -Valet (2m). 4h 21m 15s; Cynio (6m), 4h 21m 455; Whizz Bang dm), 4h 22m 435; C&rcad (Gm). 4h 24m 3Gs: Rover (3m), 4h 25m 335; Redwing (scr), 4h 27m 15a: Silver Link (2m), 4h 29m 38s; Tui (sm), 4h 31m; Omaki (Gm). 4h 33m 60s; Ara (10m). 4h 34m 40s; Rosina (9m), 4h 40m 475. The result was: Cynic. 1; Caread, 2; Valet, 3, The race in Class Z, for square bilge, onedesign boate was sailed from a point off Takapuna Beach, twice round a triangular course. At the conclusion of the first Tound, Tatarilki was) ahead,/ 'followed 14 seconds later by Kitty. Then came Winsome, Sport, Seaweed, and lan'he. On the beat to windward in the second round, Kitty forged ahead. On the run home, Kitty, Winsome, and Tatariki kept practically together, tnd a very close finish resulted, the three boate orossing the line within two seconds of each other. Kilty waa timed one second ahead of Winsome, and Winsome one second ahead .of Tatariki. The finishing t:mes were-—Kitty,, 5h 49ra 41 9 . Winsome 5h 49m 425; Tatariki. 5h 49m 435; lantho. oh 53m 355; Sport, 6h 56m 225; Seaweed 61i 3m. The result was: Kitty, 1; Winsome, 2: Tatariki. 3. Dinghy Races.— Boys: W. Glanyille, 1.
