SUMMER MEETING OPENED.

GRAND VOYAGE WINS THE CUP.

The Otahuhu Trotting Club opened its Summer Meeting at Alexandra Park, in fine weather, and there was an attendance 01 about 14,000 at the Epsom ground. Large fields were a feature of the afternoon, and several contests cf an exciting character were witnessed. Everything connected with the gathering passed cff moat pleasantly. The arrangements made by the secretary. Mr. P. Absolum. for the conduct of the meeting worked very smoothly throunhout the day. The chief stipendiary steward. Mr. H. T. Davey. and Mr. A. G. Mabee, were both present in their official capacity. The musical portion of the programme wm rendered by the orchestral band, under the leadership of Mr. Ballantino BurnnandThe eum of £46,758 was invested on the totalisator, compared with £48,481 10s put throueh the machino on the corresponding day last year, which represents a, decrease of £1723 10a. The leading ovent of the programme, the Otahuhu Cup, brought out a uo:en contestants, and when backers got to work tho Australian bred and owned horse Grand Voyago counted sufficient admirers to send him out favourite. Gold Girl was next in demand, and the other contestants were backed in the following order; —first Carbine, Lord lytton, Locandu, Dillon. Comedy Chief, Moneymaker, Prize Pearl, Woodyak William the First. All Bell, Sand Drift. The favouritism displayed for Grand \oyage proved to be in overy way justified. The Australian horse, who was always well up, cut down William tho First (who had acted the rolo of r-acemaker), three furlongs from home, and finishing up his task brilliantly he survived all challenges and won a fine roce by half-a-length from Gold Girl. -There was a warm round of applauso for Grand Vovase, who was driven by one of his cwnera IP. Glasheen), and many congratulations came to the latter on the victory gained bv the Australian bred black hyr«e. The Alexandra Handicap and the Railway Handicap, won respectively by Speculator and Queen Pirate, were both surprise victories, and in each case tho dividend returned was lares The Trotting. As they settled down De Why took command, and he had two lengths' advantage of Rio Grando when they raced into the • straight, and passing the stand that was still the order of the leading division. De Why led right round and when they reached the stand the second time Speculator, who had made up his ground in splendid style, went up with his challenge, and the two leaders raced out of the straight almost level, while Rio Grande broke at this point, De Why had a neck the best of Speculator as they dashed past the half-mile post, but a little further on Speculator headed his rival, and the latter clapping on the pace, he had a three lengths' advantage as they raced into the straight. De Why came along with a challenge at the distance, but he broke, and, Bluewood finishing at a fast gait, got to within three-iuarters of a length of Spoculator when the post waa reached. William the First had a lead of a dozen lengths of Lord Lytton as they raced aoross the top stretch, but when they reached the stand the latter was within three lengths of the loader, with Grand Voyage a similar distance away in third position. In the race up the luck William the First was still found carrying Ihe field along in bold style. Lord Lytton and Grand Voyage being still his nearest attendants Passing the stand that was still the order, and so they wont on to the back stretch, at which point Grand Voyage took second place and at the half-mile post he waa within a couple of lengths of the leader, with First Carbine and Gold Girl coming up fast. Grand Voyage cut down William the First at the three furlongs post, and tho Australian horse coming across the top stretch in great style he led into the straight with a two lengths' advantage of William the First, with" First Carbine and Gold Girl almost even next. William the First faded away in the race up to the distance, where Gold Girl and First Carbine were challenging gamely. Grand Voyage finished up his task in bold style and the Australian horse, keeping the opposition at bay oame on and won by half-a-length from Gold Girl, who was separated by r a similar distance from First Carbine, with William the First a neck away fourth, and then at an interval of two lengths came Moneymaker, who experienced bad luok at a critical stage of the contest. Warlock got off nicely, but Rangiatea Erua swerved badly and ruined hie chance at once. Warlock led past the stand, two lengths in advance of Ben Wallace, and striding along in attractive f.tyle he was still going well in the lead when the stand was reached (or the second time, at which point he was a couplo of lengths: in advance of Ben Wallace, who was followed by Red Star. In the race up the back stretch Red Star went up into second place, but though he came on gamely, he never succeeded in getting within striking distance of the leader, who came home an easy winner, two lengths in advance. Red Star was three lengths in front of Ben Wallace the latter beating Manuka Park by a neck for third place Time, 3m 31s.

Kewpie was favourite. Tiny Locanda led off, but she was quickly overhauled by Profiteer, who in turn gave way to Salamnder at tho end of a furlong. The latter led into the straight and past tho stand, at which latter point he was n, length in front ol Profiteer, with Kewpie well up next. Salamander opened up tho back with a length lead, but at the threefurlongs post Lady Dunmore. Kewpie, and Pitaroa wero challenging him strongly, and the quartette raced across the top stretch almost in line. Salamander had a. slight advantage approaching the distance, but the Waikato gelding here tired, and Lady Dunmore coming along in fine stylo came home a winner three-quarters of a length m ront of William the First, who was a neck in front of Pitaroa. with Kewpie a length away fourth.
