SAILINGS FROM AUCKLAND

NO RESUMPTION BEFORE APRIL.

The matter of shipping trade between Auckland and the Eastern Pacific islands was mentioned at the meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The secretary reported that he had written to the general manager of the Union Company asking when the company would reinstate its steamer service with these islands. He had also interviewed the local manager of the company, who had stated that there was no possibility of anything being done before April, as there was not enough trade at present to warrant an immediate resumption of the service.

It was also stated that there was no cargo offering for Tahiti, owing to the drastic plagua lestrictions in operation there. The fumigations being carried out were, it was reported, of a most sever* nature, and practically destroyed any perishable cargo, especially fruit. Tb.6 cargo from Auckland, which was of a negligible quantity, was sent by mail steamer from Wellington. Mr. R. Burns: The unfortunate thing is that the Union Company is trying to develop trade with theae islands from Wellington, and our trade is drifting away from us.
