PREMIER'S SALARY.
£8000 A YEAR PROPOSED. Auetralian and N.Z Cable Association. (Reed. 11.30 p.m.) LONDON. D*c. 24. A select committee of the House o.' Commons proposes that tho Prime Minister's, salary should be £8000. It adds that it is doubtful if any man without private; means could have held the premiership in recent years, No great changes in ministerial salaries otherwise are recommended. No salary hitherto has been attached to the office of Prime Minister in Britain. Until 1905. the. office was unknown to the law, but by a royal warrant of December 2 of that year, the holder of the office, as such, was given precedence next after the Archbishop of York. ' It is usual for the Prime Minister to hold the premiership in connection with the first lordship of the Treasury, the chancellorship of the Exchequer, a secretaryship of State or the privy seal: Mr. Lloyd George is ' Eirst Lord of the Treasury, and as such draws a salary of £5000 a year.
