Tuesday. - Judgment in the. case in which - Rose Ann- -Lafferty, boardinghonse proprietor, Frankton Junction, proceeded against a railway employee named L. A. Mrs: Lafferty, in her evidence, stated that the defendant asked for a receipt for the money ostensibly to forward to the department in order to get a remittance of the sum. Instead he apparently forwarded it on. as representing money paid. When she later asked h"*» for the money he told' her 'he had paid her and that he held a receipt for the amount. His Worship said he adjourned the case in order to • peruse J the correspondence that passed between the parties and the department' on the, matter with, a view to seeing if' there, was anything in it that might go to substantiate defendant's story. He was now quite satisfied from the correspondence " and from ; the evidence, that the defendant was not telling the truth. It was quite clear "that all along he was very hard .up. His Worship was not. satisfied with . the" defendant's statements as to.how he got the money with which he said he paid the account. He gave judgment therefore for the plaintiff for £11 and £5 13s costs.
