The Congress does not seem inclined to make appropriations in aid of Central Europe along the lines suggested by Mr. H. P. Davidson, chairman of the League of Red Cross Societies. Members point out that the' United States Government has duties to its own peoples first, and whatever aid America gives should be donated privately. The American press is strongly supporting y>e appeal of Mr. Davidson. MR. ASQUITH'S REMEDY. REVISION OF TREATIES. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association (Reed. 11.30 # p.m.) . LONDON, May 18. Mr. Asquith, speaking at the Central Hall, Westminster, pointed to the tragic situation throughout Europe. He expressed the opinion that the only practical remedy was a revision and modification of the terms of the peace treaties, coupled with prompt a"nd effective operation of the powers of the League of Nations. ,
