FRENCH STRIKE ENDING.

The strikers are returning to work on , the railways and at the ports. Practically all coasting vessels have resumed sailings. There are several other indications that the strike is collapsing. The Gasworkers' Union has ordered its provincial branches to resume work. The failure of th» strike is provoking violent discussions in.syndicalist circles. RAILWAYS OF FRANCE. UNIFICATION PROPOSALS, WORKERS TO SHARE CONTROL. A. and N.Z. PARIS, May 18. i A Bill has been introduced into the Chamber of Deputies by the Government to provide for the unification of the whole of the French railway lines. A superdirectorate, consisting of representatives of the Government, the owners, and the workers, i* proposed. Surpluses would be combined to pay a common dividend, and a Sinking fund would bo established to make ni common'losses. It is proposed to make freight and passenger rates uniform on the basis of the profit and loss of all the lines.
