NO DESTRUCTION OF MEAT.
THE HAMILTON ALLEGATION.
OFFICIAL CONTRADICTION. [BT TELEGRAPH.—OWS COfiBESFOJTDENT.] WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The statement which has been made in Hamilton regarding the taking out to sea of large quantities of meat from some, of the Southern meat works is flatly contradicted by the Imperial Supplies Department. Officials state that- all the meat in .. . the Southern stores belongs to the Impe- ' '', ij rial Government, and that it would not -r< be possible for any of it to be thrown if? away without their knowledge. Nothing jjf of the kind has been, reported. A small quantity of meat in works here -> and there- has become mouldy and has been boiled down for tallow or canned. 'k This is the worst that could happen to meat nowadays, because it is much too valuable for manure or tallow or canning to be thrown . away. .;'.

AN OLD STORY RECALLED. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDEN"
DUNEDIN. Tuesday. The statement made by Major Whyte at a meeting of the Farmers' Union held in Hamilton that he had been informed that large quantities of frozen "mutton, beef, and rabbits had been shipped out to sea from certain freezing works in the South and thrown overboard seems to ue based on a rumour. A well-known direct of a freezing company was asked to-day whether he had ever heard of such a proceeding as that referred to by Major Whyte. He replied that in his there was absolutely no truth in the state- * . ment. It is an old story how a ball of snow, once started to roll down a snow slope, gradually grows larger until, when it reaches the bottom, it has assumed quite noblo proportions. Probably the incident, which occurred about three years Ago when a quantify of frozen rabhits (which were being transferred from a freezing works to an overseas ship) were found to be tainted and had to be carried out to sea and dumped overboard, has grown in like manner to the small snowballs. Frozen mutton and beef have become rolled in 4 -0 the frozen rabbit ball— too, was a small ball.
