LAND FOR SOLDIERS.
CANTERBURY ESTATE SOLD. OWNER ASKS A LOW PRICE. [3Y TELEGRAPHOWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHEISTCHUBCH, Saturday. One of the most generous gifts mad e to the returned soldiers of New Zealand has come from Mr. George Rutherford, of Waitohj. Peaks, North Canterbury. Mr. Rutherford has sold his property to the Government for a soldier*;' settlement at a price that means a clear gift to the soldier settlers of £35,000, or more. The station consists of 12,000 acres, and Mr. Rutherford has refused £9 per acre for the land. One of the leading station agents in the city states that a conservative estimate of the value of the property, if placed upon the market to-day, would be £10 per acre. The owner of the property has sold it to the Government for £6 10s per care. The estate will be cut up into a number of runs.
