HARDWOOD POLES WANTED.
NEED FOR IMPORTATIONS. SHIPPING SPACE PROBLEM, [bz TELEGRAPHOWN correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. A request that shipping facilities, should be given to import hardwood poles for electrical extensions was made to the Prime-Minister yesterday. Mr. Massey replied that he had just received a telegram from his Department stating that many requests were being made, bat had to be declined, owing to the imperative need for giving every inch of space to coal from Newcastle. Poles, as deck cargo, would necessitate a proportionate decrease in coal tonnage, which was not justifiable. He added that the position would probably be eased in the d«w year.
