GOVERNMENT HOUSING.
SCHEME WELL IN HAND. PREFERENCE FOR CONCRETE. The Government housing scheme is in full operation, the Prime Minister stated last evening. Contracts have been let for nearly 200 concrete houses. The Department has advertised for an expert in the building of concrete houses, but he was not able to say whether the stage of making an appointment had yet been reached. It was the object to put up as many of the buildings as possible in concrete. It was hoped that this method of building would do particularly well in Auckland on account of the suitability of the scoria which was present in such abundance. This material being light and fine, would, it was hoped, prove particularly suitable for use in building operations. .
