THE LAUREL WHALEN.

ROUGH VOYAGE TO PAPEETE.

The cabled statement that the American five-masted auxiliary schooner. Laurel Whalen, en route from Auckland to Vancouver, put into Papeete, owing to engine trouble, is denied by her chief engineer. Mr. Thomas Matthews. In a letter received by the last mail, ho states that the trouble was due to stormy weather blowing the sails away, and causing the deck cargo to get adrift, with the result that it was badly damaged. Referring to the vessel's engines, he states that they ran for 40 days, and the only trouble with them was a cracked cylinder, which was replaced by a spare one carried. The vessel ran short of oil fuel, but sufficient was reserved for her to make Papeete under her own engines. To resume her voyage wj Vancouver new sails will have to be procured, as well as oil fuel.
