THE SOLDIERS' DISPUTE
QUESTION OF SETTLEMENT.
INFORMATION DESIRED.
TERMS NOT DIVULGED.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
WELLINGTON, Saturday.
When the Dominion Conference of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association opened to-day's sitting, Mr. J. P. C. Walsh (Timaru) gave notice that he would move that the resolution passed in reference to the dispute between the Auckland Association and headquarters be rescinded, and that the terms of the settlement be divulged to the conference. Mr. E. W. Leadley (Christ-church) : Would the mover be prepared to add to his motion "and without discussion?'
Mr. Walsh ; No, certainly not.
Mr. T. Long (Auckland) said he did not anticipate the resolution. He had intended to move the recommittal of the whole matter so that delegates might know exactly what had happened. He had stated the previous day that so far as he was personally concerned he did not care one iota who knew about the finding from North Cape to the Bluff. Mr. D. Colquhoun (Dunedin) rose to a point of order. Until the motion passed the previous night had been rescinded, he said he did not see how any discussion could be allowed.
Mr. W. B. Sievewright (Wellington) said the feeling of the meeting was that the question should be reopened. Mr. Long moved, and Mr. H. V. Potter (Auckland) seconded, that the matter be recommitted.
The president said that if the matter was to be reopened then there must be no discussion.
Mr. C. W. Batten (Wellington) moved that Mr. Long's motion be taken at once. Mr. Long said that in deference to the wishes of the conference he had not desired that the matter should be reopened. The Auckland delegates, however, were afraid they would not be able to give their associations a correct statement of the position. After some further discussion Mr. Long's motion was carried, and the conference then went into committee to consider the situation further.
When the conference resumed in the evening Mr. Walsh, by consent, withdrew his notice of motion.
