Mr. J. H. Upton returned from Wellington yesterday morning. Mr. C. F. Vallance, of Masterton, is a£ the Grand Hotel. Major Goddard, 0.8. E. ljr of London is at the Grand Hotel. ' Dr. E. H. Makgiil, acting-chief health officer, arrived from Wellington on Saturday. Mr. A. W. Donald has been appointed t<- be provisionally in charge of the Swiss Consulate at Auckland. Dr. E. Roberton. who wa.- injured in a motor accident on September 12. is making favourable progress towards recovery. Colonel R. H. Potter, officer commanding the Auckland military district, returned from Wellington bv vesterdav'g express. Mr. E. C. Purdie. secretary to the Auckland Education Board, and Mr. E. D. Elliott, accountant to the board, returned from Wellington bv vesterdav'g express. Mr. J. Hooton, genera] manager of the Farmers* Co-or>erative Wholesale Federation (N.Z.), Limited, arrived from Wellington yesterday, accompanied by Mrs Hooton. They are at the Grand Hotel. Mr. J. S. Laing, of the Wynvard (Tasmania) branch of the Bank of Australasia, has been appointed manager of the Masterton branch of the bank. "in succession to Mr. E. T. Costeilo. who has been promoted to the Napier branch. Captain T. Farr, D.5.0., Mr., R.N'.Z.A., has been appointed ' artillerv instructor at the General Headquarters School. Trentham.
