NEW OFFICES IN SYDNEY. IFROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] SYDNEY. Oct. 8. A fine building is being erected for the 1 South British Insurance Company in ! Sydney, at tjie corner of Hunter and O'Connell Streets, opposite the office of the I .Sydney Morning Herald. The design shows bold and comprehensive treatment j in freestone, on a rough granite base, with an entrance to the company's office fon the Hunter Street corner, and ten- | nants' entrance in o'ConneU Street. The I former is to he approached by a circular I flight of granite steps, at the top of which j four massive columns will support a I portico and the upper facade. Passing i through a handeomely-designed lobby, the j visitor will find himself in a lofty chamI ber, titled with counters and fittings of ! polished maple. On the east side a com--1 modious gallery will run the entire length. From this floor, stairs will provide access to other offices and strong-rooms in the basement. The upper portion of the building will comprise six floors. The whole of the floors, roof, and stairs are to be of reinforced concrete, supported on structural steel columns and girders encased in concrete; this form of construction ensuring an essentially fire-proof buildingThe elevation* are of c'assical design, I showing twenty-two columns standing on ' a massive granite base, supporting the I superstructure, which is encircled, by substantial cornices and surmounted by a j line stone balustrade. The work is be--1 ginning to make a good ehow. The gran- ; ite base is m trunnion, and much of the I structural steel has been fixed. The buildj ing will be a distinct acquisition to Syd--1 riey's architecture.
