NEWMARKET BOROUGH.

THE TRAMWAY SERVICE. RAILWAY LEASES. The Newmarket Borough Council me* last evening, the Mayor, Mr. C. Leek, presiding. There were also present : Messrs. S. Donaldson, P. S. Boone, F. Wade, H. J. Cooper, A. Seccombe, T. J. Watts, F. J. O'Meara, G. E. Smerdon, and A. Kent. It was reported that the names of 20 soldiers of the district had been received for inclusion in the roll of honour. » The City Council wrote stating thai, an extra Onehunga tram would be run from Queen Street at 5.3 p.m. daily. The general manager of the city tramways, Mr. J. J. Walklate, wrote stating that the request of the council that Maungawhau Road should be made a f topping place had been declined. To alleviate overcrowding, three extra trips had been made on the line daily, and more on Fridays, the day complained of bv the council. The foreman of works reported that the borough had been thoroughly cleaned up, and that portions of Broadway had been reblocked. Repairs to Carlton Gore Road and portion of Manukau Road had been necessitated by the carrying of heavy material, consequent on the" railway restrictions.

It was resolved, on* the motion of Mr. Kent, to draw the attention of the Minister for Railways to the fact that certain leases in the borough, granted in 1909 for a period of 21 years, had been cancelled: and as in the meantime Newmarket had oeen constituted a brick area several applications to build on the leased ground in other material had been declined by the council; and to ask him to consider -tie question of making the same provision ror these leases as in new railway leases, and if possible to make provision for, such in the Washing-up Bill
