CONDITIONS IN AUSTRIA

PRAISE FOR THE PEOPLE.

OPENING FOR TRADE.

LONDON. Aug. 22.

Mr. E. R. Peacock, who is studying the conditions in Austria on behalf of the Australian press, has conceived strong admiration for the courage and commonsense of the Austrian people in facing adversity. He predicts an early revival of industry.

" Every British representative I have met in Vienna,'' he says, " speaks in the highest terms of the character of the people. Representatives of oversea commercial houses wiling to supply raw materials and to give extended terms or take in exchange manufactures at the present currency rate would reap a rich harvest.

" Australian exporters might well give attention to Austria with a reasonable certainty of profitable transactions." Leather is among the most urgent requirements, and American agents arriving are doing big business. Mr. Peacock witnessed a huge military and civic demonstration at Vienna, showing most unmistakable determination to make permanent the Republic and crush any attempt to reinstate the Hapsburgs.
