GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS.
OPENING DAY'S PLAY.
AUCKLAND CLUB'S SUCCESS. [BT TELEGRAPH. — CORRESPONDENT.] IS A.PIER. Monday. The New Zealand golf championship meeting commenced to-.lay, wbeia the first and second rounds of Ihe open championship and amateur championship of Kawke's Bay were played. The course was in splendid order, but owing to the gale blowing scoring was very poor, with one or two exceptions. Morpeth (Waihi) returned a very fine card of 77 in the morning and backed it up with another food score of 81 (158) in the afternoon, his gives him a clear lead of six strokes on his nearest opponents, who are H. E. Crosse, 82—82—164, and Kapi Tarika, 6,-80—164, both of Napier. The best c&rd handed in daring the afternoon was 79 from H. B. Lusk (Christchurch). The best score handed in by the professionals was two 84's by E. S. Douglas, the present holder of the open championship. The Williams Cup, for teams of four, was won oy the Auckland Golf Club with the fine score of 340.
To-morrow the third and fourth rounds of the open championship will be decided. ■
