NORTHERN RAILWAYS.
PROPOSED CONNECTION.
LINE FROM NORTH SHORE.
FORMATION OF A LEAGUE.
The need for a railway lino to connect the North Shove with the Helensvllle line in order to shorten tho railway journey, and bring the residents of North Auckland into closer touch with the city, wa| emphasised at a meeting held in the Waitcmata County offices yesterday afternoon,. when it was decided to form a WDaite- ] mata Railway League. Mr. A. Harris, M.P., presided, and tho gathering was composed of business men, settlors and members of local bodies of tho district affected. Tho chairman eaid that as tho result of representations made by him on behalf of the residents, tho Government had made a. trial survey of the possible routes, and it had been roported that there were no engineering difficulties to bo overcome on tho route selected, tho only expensive piece of work required being a tunnel between Albany and Dairy Flat. He strongly advised that there should bo no quarrel between factions on tho question of route, pointing out that any such difference would kill the proposal. Ho suggested that the League, when formed, should decide to agreo to tho route selected by the Government engineers, and then put all its efforts into getting the work authorised and started. Dealing with the advantages of the proposed lino, Tie said that a lino constructed from a point on the North Shore to a point on the Helcnsville line, say at or about Makarau, would reduce the journey from Auckland to any point beyond tno latter station by about 20 miles, which would moan an enormous saving of timo and haulage. It was decided to form the Waitemata Railway League, and the following officers were elected President, Mr, F. E. Powell; vice-presidents, Hon, E. W. Alison, M.L.C., Mr. A. Harris, M.P., and Mr. J. W. Mullon; com'raittee, Messrs, VV. McNair, W. Hooton, J. Miller, C. : Gardiner, J. Knight, — Hichons, and Basil Robcrton. ' A further mooting is to be held tin's morning, when the action taken yesterday afternoon will bo subject to ratification.
