WIRELESS COLLEGE.
NEW INSTALLATION OPENED. Tire official opening of the new rooms and installation of the Marconi wireless apparatus at the Dominion College of Radio-telegraphy, Ltd., Queen Street, was performed yesterday afternoon by Sir Joseph Ward. A number of visitors attended the ceremony, including the Hon. A. M. Myers, and Messrs. J. S. Dickson and 0. H. Poole, M.P.'b. Sir Joseph Ward, in the course of an interesting speech, stated that the college, with others, had been for a considerable time working under difficulties, inasmuch as it was without the necessary equipment, and under the War Regulations this could not be installed without fecial permission being obtained. Another difficulty was that the colleee was, at first, not working in conjunction with the Amalgamated Wireless, Limited. Permission to instal the apparatus was obtained, and arrangements were made with the Amalgamated Wireless, Limited, for four complete sets of standard _li kilowatt Marconi apparatus. Provision had also beon made for giving students at the college priority for appointments to the Amalgamated Wireless operating staff. The Dominion College had been incorporated on February 23, 1917, as a private company, and during the year 250 pupils had received instruction. Eighty-nine students had taken up appointments, chiefly in war work, and four had made the supreme sacrifice during the past 12 months. Sir Joseph reviewed the history j of wireless telegraphy, and gave examples of the wonderful development of the science since the outbreak of the war. He expressed the opinion that, before many years, wireless telephony would be in universal use. He congratulated the directors and manager of the college upon the enterprise displayed by thorn in the interests of national efficiency, and declared the premises and plant officially open. The Hon. A. M. Myers, in a short speech, dwelt upon the enormous saving of time and money effected by the adoption of wireless telegraphy, and congratulated the people of Auckland on the ■possession of such an institution as the Dominion College. Messrs. J. S. Dickson and C. H. Poolo, M.P.'s, also spoke, and a demonstration of the working of tho apparatus was given by the instructor, Mr. J. 0. Taylor.
